I've been wanting to buy the Panic! At the Disco album for awhile now, and just haven't gotten off my butt to go do it. But, for some strange reason this morning, I've had this line "Haven't you people ever heard of...closing the GOD DAMN door..." stuck in my head all day and have almost starting singing it several times at random in the office, which would not go over well, I'm sure. Since that is the only part of the song I know, I've just been saying that one line in my head OVER and OVER and OVER again. And it might be making me a wee bit crazy.
"Listen To What The Man Said" - Wings
Dude. I have NO idea what song that is. And this makes me feel very out of touch. I may download it tonight so I can at least have heard it.

Eh. Blah. Oh well...I'll find someone else's songs to use.
I have always liked to listen to Top 40 radio stations because I just like knowing what's going on in the music world. As my son gets older (he's 11) it seems even more imperative because it gives me something to talk with him about. Now, I'll admit, the older I get the more annoyed I get with music played on these stations, and there are "phases" that the Top 40 genre goes through that make me insane (Backstreet Boys anyone?) but NOTHING has irritated me more than the two songs in CONSTANT rotation lately. I don't know their official titles and I get the two artists mixed up but they are James Blunt and Daniel Powter and the two songs are "Bad Day" and "Beautiful" - or something like that. If you listen to Top 40 at all? You know what I'm talking about.
Those two songs have been so overplayed on our Top 40 stations that I now officially hate them. I think, in theory, I might have liked both of them if they were just one of 12 songs on a CD I listened to periodically. As it is? They are one of TWO songs that are played OVER AND OVER AND OVER again and I can't take it anymore. This is worse that the "Hollaback Girl" phase several months ago. We need some new singles to obsess over NOW.
Sometime in 2002? Maybe? A friend of mine reported having seen a show in Atlanta of a band called "Maroon 5" that rocked her world. She met them afterwards and got their autographs and she would not stop talking about them until I finally gave their CD a chance. I LOVED it.
Eventually, they had a single get released that started pushing them to the spotlight and I was able to take my son to see them at a nearby university in May, 2003. It was a pretty small show considering how popular they would become by year-end.
I recently dug out the CD again because I've kinda been in the mood for them lately. I had forgotten how much I loved this CD and it has totally gotten me out of my funk that crept in from having a sick baby and an exhausting schedule this week with my son taking a theater class every night. It's a good CD that, even after gathering dust for a couple years, can still hype me up on a dragging day.
This is my latest music purchase thanks to Faction's Left of Center on Sirius radio. I heard the VF cover on that a few weeks ago and decided I wanted to hear the entire album. There are a couple of songs on it that I don't really like ("Dracula") but I really like the album as a whole. It's one of those albums that I really wish I knew all the words to all of the songs already because I want to sing along. It's got a good mix of funk, groove, and gospel that makes sunny day drives through the country all that much better.
Heh. Now I just need a sunny day drive in the country.
Of course, by "sophomore" I refer to the second purchase I make of an artist's music. It may not be their second album, but it's usually the second one I buy. The second Dixie Chicks album I bought wasn't as awesome as the first I bought. Same goes for Jason Mraz.
I heard him interviewed a mere days after Waiting for My Rocket To Come came out and I dont even think I had heard any singles off the album yet. During the interview he did an acoustic "Curbside Prophet" and it was rockin, so I immediately bought the album. I really loved ALMOST the entire thing.
I bought Mr. A-Z recently and have listened through it a few times and have decided I really don't like it. Maybe I just liked the first one too much for anything to compare, but I didn't even find a song on it that I might play repeatedly, like off his first album. Eh.
Many moons ago, I bought a Dixie Chick album (Home) because I was kinda in a folksy music mood and they had some good folksy/blue-grassy tunes on the album. I really liked several of the songs, as long as I was in the right mood. There were a few tracks I hated, but a few I loved, so it worked itself out.
Then? They spoke out against the President.
Then? They appeared naked on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
Then? Everyone started hating them.
(Maybe not in that order)
Which of course? Made me love them even when I kinda didn't care about them much before - I just liked a few of their songs. Nothing makes me jump on a bandwagon like seeing everyone else jumping off.
When their last album came out, I wanted to buy it for two reasons. One? To hear some more femi-folksy music. Two? Because the country music stations in town were refusing to play anything from it. Since I'm all about being a non-conformist, I had to buy the CD. When I went to pick it up? There were two girls in front of the display actually talking about how they used to like the Dixie Chicks before they "bashed the President" and now they hate them.
Man, I loved grabbing that CD off from the shelf in front of them.
Well - long story short? I don't like it. It seems more country than folksy. I've only listened through it once, but I don't think I let any single song run all the way through before moving to the next one. Oh well.
I consider that 12 bucks just going to the cause of going against popular opinion, and therefore not a waste. Too bad, though. I really liked the last album.
I really REALLY like Pink's new song "Stupid Girls" and I've actually been contemplating getting the whole album. My husband hates it when I get into Top 40 music but he doesn't even mind Pink so much. I like the fact that she mocks the girls that I mock as well, it's nice to have common sense of irritation with the musicians you listen to, I believe.
I also think she's kinda cool and if I were a teenager? I'd totally dye my hair like hers. Hell, I'd do it if I was working out of my home!
This is currently the number one obsession of LilZ. He downloaded the soundtrack off Itunes the second the movie premiered, he then bought the soundtrack at Wal-Mart. He has also TiVo'ed every showing. The Karaoke version, the dance-along version, the behind-the-scenes version. I had to tell him he could only keep TWO versions on the TiVo. It was one of the toughest decisions of his life.
It's a cute movie and I love that it's popular, but I fear it may be making me crazy.
My husband went to Nashville Friday night to hear his friend's band play. He had a ball and got to catch up with a bunch of friends from high school. Against Me! has signed with a bigger label since the last show my husband went to, so he got to hear some fun stories about life on the road now that they get hotels and roadies to help them set up.
At one point in my husband's life, he was touring with his own band, sleeping in his van and wearing dirty clothes - smelling like hell at every show he played. He told me that at that point in his life, he thought that would be his life forever, because he loved it so much. He said it was kinda bittersweet seeing his buddy make his dream come true. My husband wouldn't change his life for anything, but he knows his 18 year old self was just a little jealous.
Hell, so is MY 18 year old self.
